About Sarah's Pregnancy Classes

Khalsa Way Preganancy Yoga was born out of the system of yoga known as Kundalini Yoga and Meditation. This yogic system, also known as the yoga of awareness, incorporates asana (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), mantra (chanting) and meditation. The primary aim of Kundalini Yoga is to unite the practitioner with his or her higher consciousness.  Unlike most forms of yoga practiced in the West today, Kundalini Yoga also includes prescribed sets of dynamic exercise (kriyas) that act on specific areas of the physical and subtle body to help balance mind, body and spirit; however we do not practice kriyas in Khalsa Way classes.

The main difference between Khalsa Way and other pregnancy yoga classes is the use of mantra (chanting or singing) and seated meditation (however, you might experience these facets of yoga in other classes as well).

NOTE: You do not have to sing or chant if you do not feel comfortable doing so! Listening is just fine.

What is the structure of the class?

Khlasa Way Pregnancy yoga is suitable for women of all ability and fitness levels, however, if you are experiencing any health challenges, please let me know.

  • We will begin the class with a group check-in to find out how everyone is feeling

  • We will then “tune-in” with the Adi mantra, “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo,” which means, “I call upon the teacher within me; my inner wisdom.” Students may chant along or just listen if they prefer

  • Once we have tuned in we will begin the physical practice for the session including static postures and active movement

  • After our physical practice we will practice a meditation followed by deep relaxation

  • We finish the class by singing a short song of blessing. Words to the song will be provided. Again, you may join in or simply listen.

Can I drop in to a class?

  • Yoga mats, blocks and blankets are provided but you may like to bring an extra cushion or bolster for relaxation
